Barquisimeto [VE] - Construction stopped due to financial problems in Venezuela

The current difficult financial situation in the country, Venezuela has had a strong impact on the progress of many infrastructure projects which preciously had priority status. This includes the two new segregated lane Trolleybus systems in Mérida and Barquisimeto.

Both systems have, for months, shown no signs of any significant progress.

In Mérida Trolleybuses continue to offer free transport along a short stretch and at certain times during the day.

Barquisimeto, however, is far from even test running on any sections.
The 80 Neoplan-Viseon/Bombardier-NG-articulated trolleybuses are, for the most part, parked unprotected in the open.

The financial problems of the country are caused by the fluctuating oil prices and have a negative effect on the credit capacity of the country.
Currently, however, negotiations with various 50% state owned financial organisations from various other countries to alleviate the problems are ongoing.

Our photo shows one of the new Neoplan-Viseon/Bombardier-Gelenkobusse for Barquisimeto on the overhead and ready to go - unfortunately still more a dream than reality. This photo was taken in November 2008 in Zurich at a conference for experts.
